Synopsis

This talk, explores innovative halogen-free flame retardant (HFFR) solutions, for thermoplastics such as HIPS and PA.

It highlights, the health and environmental concerns, associated with traditional halogenated flame retardants, and antimony trioxide, emphasizing the need for safer alternatives.

The concept of reactive flame retardants is introduced, where flame retardant molecules are chemically bonded to the polymer backbone, improving thermal stability, moisture resistance and dispersion, while reducing additive levels and costs. Experimental data on PA66 and HIPS, demonstrate the effectiveness of masterbatches like MB PAPA LINK 10, which achieve UL94 V0 ratings with bromine levels below 900 ppm, meeting IEC 61249-2-21 standards.

These reactive systems, offer strong flame retardancy, no migration, and long shelf life. The presentation concludes, by acknowledging the progress made, and the ongoing challenges in transitioning, to more sustainable and high-performance flame retardant materials.
