Synopsis

The plastics industry is entering a decisive decade, where decarbonisation is no longer a voluntary ambition but a strategic industrial necessity. Rising energy costs, climate regulation, carbon pricing and increasing market pressure are reshaping how plastics are produced, processed and placed on the market.

This presentation introduces the Roadmap for the Decarbonisation of the Portuguese Plastics Industry, developed by APIP in partnership with Ernst & Young, as a practical, industry-led tool to support companies on the path to carbon neutrality by 2050. Based on real industrial data, the roadmap identifies cost-effective decarbonisation pathways, tailored to different subsectors and technological realities.

Special focus is given to the role of the circular economy as a key lever for emissions reduction, highlighting how recycling, ecodesign, alternative feedstocks and value-chain integration can translate sustainability objectives into tangible industrial value.

The session also presents the Sustainable Plastics mobilising agenda, showcasing how strategic planning can evolve into investment, innovation and large-scale industrial transformation.
