Synopsis

Guanidines, such as diphenylguanidine (DPG), are widely used as secondary accelerators in sulfur vulcanization for rubber compounding. They enable high cure rates with safe scorch times and help achieve optimal mechanical and dynamic properties. Guanidines are compatible with multi-phase elastomer blends and high filler loads, ensuring uniform vulcanization across natural and synthetic rubbers. These features make them essential in demanding applications like tires, conveyor belts, and technical rubber goods, where heat-aging resistance and durability are critical.

In recent years, the industry has moved toward sustainable rubber formulations. Replacing guanidines, has become a priority due to regulatory concerns and aromatic amine emissions during vulcanization. Their versatility makes substitution technically challenging.

MLPC, an Arkema subsidiary, is a global leader in the manufacturing of secondary accelerators in powder and masterbatch form.

This study presents results on new bio-based, non-aniline based, low-nitrosamine generating accelerators designed to replace guanidines. These compounds deliver a strong balance between curing kinetics, mechanical as well as dynamical properties. This work aim to support rubber industrials to reduce their HSE risks, and supports their global sustainability goals and circular economy strategies.
